Why You Scientifically Need The Outdoors

Fun fact: I’m originally from a country town but have lived in cities for around 15 years.

I’m not sure I’ll ever give up city living – I love places with lots of culture, people and I must admit I also like the sense of anonymity that urban life brings.

But I’m not a city slicker at heart.

One thing I can’t give up is getting outside… and not just in the central business district of a city for a quick sandwich at lunchtime.

Being outside in nature gives me energy and I’m well known for finding a beautiful walking path wherever I go.

After discussing this with a friend who feels similarly to me, she told me it’s a real theory called biophilia - an innate and genetically determined affinity of human beings with the natural world - and here’s why you need it:

It grounds you

My kinesiologist picked up on my need for the outdoors too.

It sounds a little weird but she asked me once if I put my bare feet on the grass every day… I thought ‘my life isn’t Pretty Woman lady’ (who could forget this scene?).

So no I wasn’t putting my bare feet on the grass every day but since consciously starting I realise how amazing it feels. Seriously – try it.

It gives you perspective

There’s nothing like looking out at an incredible view of a beach or forest or any kind of natural scene and realising how insignificant you and your issues are in relation to the rest of the planet.

I don’t mean to be flippant about what’s going on for you, but I find my issues easily fade into the background when I’m looking out on something so much grander and more beautiful than my tiny life.

It’s good for your health

Ok this one is pretty obvious. Getting outside, fresh air and the exercise that often comes with it – whether it be a leisurely walk, cycling, or abseiling – is really great for you.

My advice would be to try and come up with one activity a week that takes you outside.

Make some of them easy – for example, I walk along the creek just behind our house, and some of them more challenging – location wise or physically, and enjoy the weekly benefits.

November Recap and December Intentions

November is nearly done and we’re heading into true holiday season (and also summer) here in Australia.

These intention posts have been great for me. They keep me grounded to a few specific aims throughout the month and also make me look ahead to the next period.

So how did I do last month?

Schedule quarterly shopping days

I certainly scheduled this a few times, but as I was away on trips three weekends of the month, this one fell a little flat.

I did spend one Sunday afternoon trying on clothes with no luck (why is it all cheesecloth and resort wear at the moment?) so went back and did some shopping on my old favourites: Asos and Adore Beauty for some online fulfilment.

The good news is scheduling the day made me actually assess what is missing in my wardrobe.

Plus, I had plenty of other fun things on this month so I know I can schedule one of these to brighten up a less exciting weekend in the future.

Eat more frogs at work

I wasn’t doing so well on eating frogs until I moved desks to a quieter part of the office.

We’ll see if it lasts but the change of scenery and quieter atmosphere has made it much easier for me to plan my days and get rid of those pesky frogs that have been hanging around for weeks (or months), but I have never bothered to do.

As I mentioned in this post, I’ve also received the PDF of the new Productivity Planner and have been trying to narrow down my top three tasks of the day, knowing if I get those done, I’ll feel satisfied and accomplished.

Plan for the holidays

There are three key areas for me around Christmas - organising gifts, stocking up on my favourite food and drink, and making sure my calendar aligns to all the fun events ahead.

The gift and refreshments list is written and my calendar is happily bulging at the seams.

Once those items are ticked off, I then make sure I donate to charity for Christmas to help those who don’t have the luxury of planning the holiday season the way I do.

December intentions

Swim

I was lucky enough to grow up in a house with a pool, so summer to me definitely includes swimming.

This one has been a struggle for me for a few years now, as I live over an hour from any decent beaches and I generally put off going to public pools.

Planning in my dips is the main roadblock here so I’m going to keep an eye on the weather forecast, lock in a few beach and pool trips, and I know for sure I’ll be able to swim over the family Christmas at the very least.

Do outdoor yoga

How nice does this sound? I read about outdoor yoga classes in our local newspaper last year, and have wanted to try it since.

I’ve done beach yoga, but as I mentioned I’m a bit far from the ocean to recreate that any time soon. I'll start here and see if I can rope a friend in to join me.

Enjoy events

Ok, I think I’m reusing one of October’s intentions, but how important is this? The month of December will fly by and it’s easy to get lost in the busy-ness of the season.

Welcome to the next interview in the series, 'Where I'm At'. It's a voyeuristic, yet helpful look into the lives of women who are finding where the light plays within them.

Their daily rituals, ways of managing stress and advice to you, the readers, are captured in these interviews.

This month we’re talking to Rachel Gadiel from the blog, Nourish. Rachel is a gorgeous coach and blogger, who lives in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. She focuses on many of our favourite topics around here – simplicity, productivity and of course, nourishing ourselves. Rachel also coaches other creative bloggers and business owners on intentional ways to grow their passions.

When I reached out to Rachel, I had the loveliest response from her, so admire her even more than when I was reading from afar! Enjoy the interview and head to her blog and social media (her Instagram is one of my faves) to show her some love. 

 

What is your usual wake up time?

During the week I generally wake up at around 7am. Weekends are definitely an indulgent, slower start at around 8 and sometimes 9am!

How do you like to start your day?

On weekdays my morning routine is super simple as I’m on a mission to get out the door to work. It starts with a glass of warm water and lemon juice and a healthy breakfast, followed by a cup of coffee. I always make sure I begin each day with positive affirmations and a chapter out of a personal development book I’m reading.

A positive mindset is everything – become the master of your thoughts and believe you can achieve anything, and you will!

Tell us about your commute.

I’m lucky to live super close to work – it’s a 5 minute drive and 30 minute walk. I intentionally set the goal of walking to and from work 3 days a week which is a great way to fit in moving my body. To make this time productive I love listening to an uplifting podcast or a book on Audible. The other days I drive, and when I do it feels like a luxury!

Do you like to plan your day ahead or allow for some spontaneity?

As I’m working full time and hustling my coaching biz on the side, it is super important for me to be organised and keep on top of my daily to do list. I’m a firm believer that the secret of success lies in your daily routine and habits. Being super clear about your overall vision, combined with the daily discipline of your habits, will naturally mean you’re on the path to success.

Don’t get me wrong, I still think leaving room for spontaneity is important too, but it’s all about balance and getting your priorities in order.

How do you spend your ideal lunch break to recharge for the afternoon?

I always grab my book and get out of the office to soak up the fresh air and sunshine – this gives me more energy and a positivity boost to power through the afternoon. I find reading always inspires me with ideas for blog posts and my coaching clients, so I always have a notebook handy to write down any nuggets of wisdom!

What kind of workout schedule do you try to adhere to?

I aim to work out at least 3–4 times a week and try to move my body most days. I tend to do a mix of both resistance training and cardio. I like to mix things up by doing a boot camp once a week, pilates and I’m also a fan of the BBG by Kayla Itsines and love doing her workouts at home. Throw in the odd yoga class and run when time permits. 

How do you like to end your day?

End of the day is all about unplugging and cuddling up to my love on the couch, watching a TV show together. At the moment we’re watching season 3 of Orange is the New Black - such an awesome show!

What time do you doze off?

Bedtime for me is 11-11:30pm.
