December Recap (and a break from intentions in January)

Thanks again for keeping me accountable through December, readers.

While it often seems much easier to stay on the couch on a Sunday afternoon or hit the snooze button at 5.30am on a Wednesday, I instead made my way to the pool and to an outdoor yoga class in beautiful gardens.

I knew they were activities I really wanted to do and they were, of course, worth the effort.

Swim

I see much more of this in my future while visiting family over Christmas, but Melbourne delivered on the hot weather and I made it to the local pool twice.

Yes, it’s packed and you can really only dip in and out of the water but for the chance of a Frosty Fruit and feeling cool water on hot skin, it was totally worth the visits.

Do outdoor yoga

To be honest, this one has been on my wishlist for over a year.

After some searching I found Peachy Yoga, who run super reasonably priced classes in Fitzroy Gardens in East Melbourne (very convenient for me on the way to work). The classes run on Wednesdays and Thursdays but I was afraid I wouldn’t fit one in due to a hectic December.

But you know what you need during a hectic December? Outdoor yoga!

The hatha style class was run by the lovely Claire and within two minutes I was gazing up at the sky, breathing in fresh air and already feeling the tension of the holiday season melt away.

Working through the routine, I couldn’t help but notice the dewy grass, the sound of galahs and the imposing beauty of the trees. Not bad before work right?

I highly recommend trying Peachy Yoga or an outdoor class more local to you.

Enjoy events

Gratitude was a big focus for me this month.

Even though I was busy and felt some stress, I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was to be going to Christmas parties, having wonderful conversation over meals with friends and sitting out on my balcony admiring my new fairy lights with a glass of wine.

Not everyone feels the same way around this time of year, so I am conscious to be thankful and not wish this time away.

In line with the purpose of this blog, I’m feeling pretty tired at the end of 2015 so am giving myself a little break in January regarding intentions.

I’ll still let you know how January goes and will be ready to set intentions again for the month of February.

November Recap and December Intentions

November is nearly done and we’re heading into true holiday season (and also summer) here in Australia.

These intention posts have been great for me. They keep me grounded to a few specific aims throughout the month and also make me look ahead to the next period.

So how did I do last month?

Schedule quarterly shopping days

I certainly scheduled this a few times, but as I was away on trips three weekends of the month, this one fell a little flat.

I did spend one Sunday afternoon trying on clothes with no luck (why is it all cheesecloth and resort wear at the moment?) so went back and did some shopping on my old favourites: Asos and Adore Beauty for some online fulfilment.

The good news is scheduling the day made me actually assess what is missing in my wardrobe.

Plus, I had plenty of other fun things on this month so I know I can schedule one of these to brighten up a less exciting weekend in the future.

Eat more frogs at work

I wasn’t doing so well on eating frogs until I moved desks to a quieter part of the office.

We’ll see if it lasts but the change of scenery and quieter atmosphere has made it much easier for me to plan my days and get rid of those pesky frogs that have been hanging around for weeks (or months), but I have never bothered to do.

As I mentioned in this post, I’ve also received the PDF of the new Productivity Planner and have been trying to narrow down my top three tasks of the day, knowing if I get those done, I’ll feel satisfied and accomplished.

Plan for the holidays

There are three key areas for me around Christmas - organising gifts, stocking up on my favourite food and drink, and making sure my calendar aligns to all the fun events ahead.

The gift and refreshments list is written and my calendar is happily bulging at the seams.

Once those items are ticked off, I then make sure I donate to charity for Christmas to help those who don’t have the luxury of planning the holiday season the way I do.

December intentions

Swim

I was lucky enough to grow up in a house with a pool, so summer to me definitely includes swimming.

This one has been a struggle for me for a few years now, as I live over an hour from any decent beaches and I generally put off going to public pools.

Planning in my dips is the main roadblock here so I’m going to keep an eye on the weather forecast, lock in a few beach and pool trips, and I know for sure I’ll be able to swim over the family Christmas at the very least.

Do outdoor yoga

How nice does this sound? I read about outdoor yoga classes in our local newspaper last year, and have wanted to try it since.

I’ve done beach yoga, but as I mentioned I’m a bit far from the ocean to recreate that any time soon. I'll start here and see if I can rope a friend in to join me.

Enjoy events

Ok, I think I’m reusing one of October’s intentions, but how important is this? The month of December will fly by and it’s easy to get lost in the busy-ness of the season.

October Recap and November Intentions

We are almost through October so it’s time to review my intentions for the last month.

Cut off technology at 10pm (and read hard copy books)

I am getting better with this intention. I’ve been reading this great book, which is basically short interviews with interesting Londoners. It does entice me to read every night but I still find myself often taking ‘one last look’ at social media. Disconnecting from technology is a work in progress for all of us I think.

Enjoy the daylight

Unfortunately I injured myself earlier in the month, so I haven’t been able to do much exercise, including going to the gym. However, walking has been doable so I’ve been walking along the river most nights after work before we sit down to dinner.

With the clocks moving forward in Australia, it’s been beautifully light and warm, so I have definitely felt an increased appreciation for the daylight. And with less wine than I intended to enjoy last month, which is probably a good thing!

Over my birthday weekend I made sure to sit back and enjoy special moments with friends and family and not let them pass by too quickly.

Unfortunately the music festival I was going to was cancelled but I still have plenty of upcoming fun activities to practice this technique on.

November Intentions

Schedule quarterly shopping days

Uh, how fun does this sound? This year I’ve been planning my budget a little better and putting some extra money away for clothes and beauty.

It’s starting to build up and I figure rather than making spontaneous online shopping hauls (hello Asos), I should make a day of it and go into stores, try on and buy great products and finish with a meal or drink with a girlfriend. Who’s with me?

Eat more frogs at work

I ebb and flow with this concept, but back when I wrote this post, it was working really well for me. It’s a very busy season at work so, rather than fall behind, I’m going to try and get my ‘ugliest’ task out of the way first thing.

Whether that be a phone call I’m dreading, a report I’ve been putting off, or plugging my headphones in and getting my inbox back under control, it will put me in good stead for the rest of the work day.

Plan for the holidays

Yes, it’s nearly that time again! Between work and social events, I usually do a frantic online shop (are we seeing a pattern here?) in early-mid December.

This year I’d like to think ahead, work on some great, thoughtful gifts and also get a food and drink list started to make this season extra special.

5 Christmas Staycation Ideas

With Christmas just days away, most of our workplaces close down for a period of time.

Time off work is always a winner, but it can be a pricey nightmare to travel at this time of year. I also know a lot of people’s Christmas celebrations revolve around the city they live in, so they can’t stray too far.

Enter the staycation.

I was lucky enough to have my own staycation a couple of months back. A short break between jobs and extra time around the house sounded blissful to me, but as a Type A personality, suffering from bouts of imposter syndrome, I know I have the tendency to ‘potter’. Also known as: cleaning, cooking, doing boring errands and catching up on my long to do list.

All worthy activities that feel nice to tick off the list, but not exactly a break.

I planned out some activities to keep me occupied and away from the vacuum cleaner and also set some ground rules to bring ease to the period and make it feel different to my everyday routine.

First, the ground rules:

  • Enjoy a minimum of 9 hours sleep each night (what a rule!)
  • No cleaning
  • No social media, just email and my blog reader Feedly
  • No worrying or guilt

Then came the preparation…

I knew as a Type A, I couldn’t sit around a dirty house all week with no food in the house. The first morning of the staycation, I stocked the kitchen and gave the house a clean. I recommend the same for you if it will make the rest of your time off more enjoyable.

Now onto my top 5 staycation activities for you to try:

Make spa water

This was a random one I’d read about on a couple of blogs about staycations, but it’s become a fast family favourite.

Making flavoured (or spa, as I’ve dubbed it) water is meant to give the impression that you’re on holiday, drinking something a little tropical and different to the norm.

My personal favourite was sliced cucumber and lemon infused in a jug of water (or mineral water if you prefer some fizz). Stick it in the fridge and enjoy for a couple of days, refreshing as needed. Lemon water is also meant to be great for your digestion and immune system.

Some other combinations I’m keen to try – fresh mint and lime, orange and mango slices, and blueberry and pomegranate. Delicious.

Catch up on media (not social!) with no guilt

Whether it’s piling up books beside our bed or in our Kindle, saving articles and emails to go back to one day, or making a list of the movies we need to see before we die, these fun lists start to morph into ‘have tos’ rather than ‘want tos’.

When I’m busy at work, it’s hard to find the time to enjoy these things, and even when I do, I know I’ve got other things I ‘could’ be doing. Time to ditch the guilt and indulge. Lie around for hours watching box sets, escaping into a book, or catching up on all the Serial podcasts. Take advantage of the time off, and no shame ladies.

Try those classes you never get to

Not all places are open over Christmas, but if you search ahead, you can totally tick some New Year’s resolutions off before the end of December.

Head to that yoga class you always skip (or even do the 10am one on a Tuesday that work always prevents you from making!), try a photography or cooking class – anything you would try on a vacation when you have the time.

Enjoy a 'do nothing' morning

These are the absolute best. Turn off your phone, do not set your alarm, even stash all your clocks out of sight.

Let your body clock wake you up, then stay in bed. Read, stare at the ceiling, do whatever works for you. Again, no guilt!

Visit new cafés and restaurants

Another benefit of the staycation is the time to visit those cafes and restaurants you read about or saved in your phone during the year. On my staycation, I drove across town in the middle of the day (hello, no traffic) to try a new organic café. I honestly never go to that suburb and would rarely drive that far for lunch, but… I had the time…

Plus, often people travel out of town over the festive season, so you might find busier restaurants are easier to get into. Just check the opening hours.

And remember you’ve got at least 9 hours sleep ahead, so again, indulge with no guilt.
